Water Stations and Important Facts of Water
There has always been the stereotype of the water cooler being a place where employees go to gossip and waste valuable company time. On the contrary, there are many benefits to providing water for employees. The standard amount of water a person should be drinking daily is 64 fl. oz., and this number increases depending on one’s physical activity level. It has been proven through numerous studies that avoiding dehydration improves mood, health, and productivity among employees. To specify, hydration does not mean sugary beverages such as soda and energy drinks. It means clean, pure water. In fact, water coolers use less energy to run compared to drink vending machines.
Dehydration is a common factor when it comes to feelings such as sluggishness, headaches, irritability, and hunger. It is a common misconception that one isn’t dehydrated if they aren’t thirsty. Thirst is an early stage of dehydration and can often be exacerbated when one consumes caffeinated beverages throughout the day. Caffeine being a diuretic, it leads to even further dehydration.
The summer is a time when it is especially important for workers to recognize the need for proper hydration, whether or not they physically feel thirsty. This holds even more importance when employees are working outside or in non- air conditioned spaces. According to OSHA standards, employers must provide potable water to their employees within 100 yards of wherever they may be working. Potable, meaning the water provided “meets the standards for drinking purposes of the State or local authority having jurisdiction.” Keep these facts in mind no matter if one is working in an office or on a construction site. Consuming an adequate amount of water will keep employees sharper and more productive. Cheers!
Go Bottleless and Avoid the Scam
Advertisements for bottled water have led us to believe that the water from the sink is deadly poisonous and tastes like feet. Maybe that is an exaggeration but based on the advertisements, we are told that bottled water is cleaner than tap and therefore healthier. The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) did a four year test and found that not only were some bottles not cleaner than normal tap but also contained harmful substances. The bottle itself may even be harmful.
Smart Water’s advertisement has a celebrity spokesperson, Jennifer Aniston, and the message is that we are “smart” consumers if we choose this kind of water. Also it helps that a toned, half-naked Jennifer Aniston is getting our attention. How smart is bottled water?
Based on the NRDC testing some bottled water companies are skating by the weak federal limits but not adhering for the state standards of bottled water testing. The federal government regulates our drinking water from the tap more than bottled water companies.
The good news is that the tested bottles did not contain E. Coli, an extremely harmful bacteria. Most bottles were comparable to tap water, not necessarily better. However, the testing was expensive and bottles could not be tested extensively. Only 1,000 bottles were tested.
Eight percent of the bottles from California contained a small level of arsenic, a known poison and carcinogen. One sample contained chloroform and another had elevated nitrates. Both could cause cancer. At least three of the bottles had high contamination.
The chart below also shows the possibility of bacteria growing the longer a bottle is sitting in storage. The bottle itself may lead to sickness.
Those who are elderly, sick or children are safer to drink boiled tap water. Why not try a home filtration system or a Bottleless Water Cooler? You can take out chlorine, lead and other contaminants and enjoy water in a glass.

With spring and summer approaching we tend to crave more cold beverages, and yes, as Americans,we tend to not always grab the healthiest thing. Here are a few alternatives that will hopefully help you make right choice and forget the vending machine. We think you will like them and you will save money. Hey you can’t complain about that!
One idea is to have a water machine like the ION system that offers filtered water, as well as, a carbonated alternative. This tank less water machine is a great alternative to bottled water and even bottled sparkling water that slowly adds up in cost. But don’t worry, we do not expect anyone to drink fizzy plain carbonated water plain. Try sprucing up your water with lemon, or other fruit. You can even try one of the over 90+ flavors that Torani Syrups makes allowing you to make your own Italian Soda. Torani offers a variety of sugar-free options made with Splenda.
Iced tea, did you know that iced tea has some great health benefits. According to Livestrong.com iced tea is a great replacement for sugary drinks such as soda or even fruit juices. Tea in general whether black or green is high is anti-oxidants. Plus, how can we forget, that tea has the wonderful mind boosting caffeine to help keep us alert! We like to recommend making tea in your coffee maker (using a different brew funnel of course) so you get the best extraction then diluting it with water to taste.
And of course, how could we forget coffee doesn’t always have to be bad for you . Especially if you feel that you need that extra jolt of caffeine. Throw a few pieces of ice in your favorite regular or flavored coffee with a pinch or skim milk and your favorite sugar package or sugar alternative and your afternoon pick me up will surely kick in.
Arctic Falls would be more than happy to help your office with any of these beverage alternatives. Please feel free to contact us for more information
I preach all the time the inconvenience of 5 gallon bottled waters, but what about the fact that your small bottled water is really just filtered tap water that is insanely over priced? Recently I came across this video from Business Insider showing which companies use tap v spring water.
In reality most filtered water systems cost probably less than per day than that bottled water that you are grabbing out of your office vending machine or from the local gas station-give us a call to find out about how we can offer you unlimited, cold, filtered, water at a low monthly price!
Of course, we all hear how much water to drink daily, but who can keep up with that? Well, thanks to Apple and ITunes there are now an apps that help you log your water in take. So this summer, every time you go to the water cooler, in which we are sure you will probably grab your phone, now you can log onto your app and track your water. Some apps even focus on other beverages such as tea, coffee, wine and more! Have you tried any of these apps? Which one is your favorite? Let us know on our Facebook Page!
